The Ameliorating Effects of Salvia hispanica‎ Seeds Ethanolic Extract on ‎Methylprednisolone-Induced Osteoporosis in Female Rabbits


 This study aimed to determine the effect of an ethanolic extract Salvia hispanica‎ (Sh) seeds on ‎osteoporosis induced by methylprednisolone (MP) in female rabbits assessing bone ‎mineral density (BMD), serum levels calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, and parathyroid ‎hormone, as well histopathological changes femur bone. Fifty ‎‎(Lepus cuniculus) averaging 1800±125 g 8±1.4 months old were used this study. ‎They randomly allocated five groups 10 each. The negative control group ‎received only subcutaneous normal saline (1 mL/kg BW). positive received MP subcutaneously at a dose 0.2 mg/kg BW per ‎day for 30 days, followed oral BW) day two months. ‎Group 3 administration Sh seed 600 Group 4 alendronate (Ale) ‎of 3.6 weekly 5 ‎followed Ale then extract. continued until one ‎week after cessation treatments. results showed that BMD ‎concentrations D significantly decreased (P<0.05), ‎while concentrations hormone increased (P<0.05) ‎positive compared with ‎months treatment week withdrawal. However, methanolic animals three ‎ameliorated these parameters reverted them values. Histopathological ‎analysis head revealed abnormal morphology ‎group, while preserved histology other ‎groups. These findings concluded has ‎potential prevent loss chronic glucocorticoid therapy may have ‎significant implications osteoporosis.
